VOCABULARY WORDS







"Stout longbow".. sturdy large wooden bow, usually about five to six feet long, used to shoot
arrows.

Quiver …………a case designed to hold and transport arrows, often strapped to the back or waist.
 

Archer………… one who uses a bow and arrow.

Outlaw……….one whose activities repeatedly violate the law;

Rapscallion……a mischievous person; rascal.

Harboring…… providing shelter or safety for.

Scoundrel ……person who disregards morals or laws; villain.

Turret……….. a small circular tower on a larger building such as a castle

Pheasant………a wild game bird

"Cast an eye "……look in a direction

Pounds……….English money

Noggins………heads

"Pact of brotherhood"….a sworn promise between friends

"A dead shot"…..a precise shot, hitting the very center of the target
 

"Swear on oath" ……a pledge or promise to do something

Oppressed………….treated harshly or unfairly

"Rout the thieves"…..search out the thieves

"Made mockery"…..made fun off

Wager……………bet

Braggart………..one who boasts or brags a lot

Quaff …. …….to drink deeply and with obvious enjoyment.

Mead….. …….a drink made of fermented honey and water

Parched………dry

Serf………….. in feudal societies,a person who is held in servitude on a lord's land and who may be sold or otherwise transferred with the land.

Bob White……a bird whose song sounds like it is singing the words, "bob white"

Ruse…………..a trick

Plumage………feathers

Shooting match…target contest with bows and arrows

Truce………….peace treaty

Quarter staff …a long pole or rod

Leggings…..… a covering of canvas, leather, or the like for the lower leg or sometimes the whole leg.

Crone………… a withered old woman

Tunic ………. a loose-fitting, knee-length outer garment, often without sleeves and sometimes belted

"Two finger breadths"..measurement of two fingers wide

"Bull's eye"…,,….the center of the target in archery

Impertinence........ rudeness

Rogue………….. one who is mischievous or naughty

Forfeit…………..give up

Fracas…………..a noisy disturbance or quarrel.

"A bounty of 200 pounds"..a reward of money for the capture of an outlaw

Chief collector of revenues..tax collector
